Colonoscopy

Performed to identify and/or correct a problem in the colon. An endoscope will be inserted through the anus and gently moved through the colon while you are sedated. The procedure usually takes 30 minutes.

MoviPrep Instructions

Procedure Instructions:

  • Do not EAT or DRINK anything after midnight the night before your procedure except for necessary medications like Blood Pressure, Heart, Thyroid, or Seizure which can be taken with a sip of water.
  • You will be sedated for the procedure.  Someone will need to drive you home.
  • Please inform the doctor if you are currently taking Coumadin.
    • Stop Coumadin 5 days prior to the procedure.
  • Stop Iron Supplements 5 days prior to the procedure.
  • One day prior to your procedure, start on a clear liquid diet beginning when you wake up.
    • Coffee and tea without any milk, sugar or cream, artificial sweeteners are okay.
    • Beef/Chicken broth
    • Diet soda, Gatorade, Powerade, and water
    • Sugar Free Jell-o/Popsicles (orange/grape/lime/lemon)
    • White grape juice,  white cranberry juice, Apple juice
    • NO SOLID FOODS – ONLY CLEAR LIQUIDS
  • Empty 1 Pouch A and 1 Pouch B into the disposable container adding lukewarm drinking water to the top line of the container. Mix to dissolve.
  • Beginning drinking solution at: 6:00 P.M.
  • The MoviPrep container is divided by 4 marks. Every 15 minutes, drink the solution down to the next mark (approximately 8 oz), until the full liter is consumed.
  • Drink 16 oz of the clear liquid of your choice. This is a necessary step to ensure adequate hydration and an effective prep.
  • Beginning drinking solution at: 10:00 P.M.

  • If you have trouble drinking the solution, try a flat diet Ginger Ale and wait about an hour before trying to drink anymore of the prep.
  • If you are DIABETIC:

  • You will be sedated for the procedure. Someone will need to drive you home.
  • Please inform the doctor if you are currently taking Coumadin.
    • Stop Coumadin 5 days prior to the procedure.
  • Stop Iron Supplements 5 days prior to the procedure.
  • One day prior to your procedure, start on a clear liquid diet beginning when you wake up.
    • Coffee and tea without any milk, sugar or cream, artificial sweeteners are okay.

  • At 6:00 P.M., begin the first dose of SUPREP. Pour ONE (1) 6-ounce bottle of SUPREP liquid into the mixing container given in the SUPREP kit. Add cool drinking water to the 16-ounce line on the container and mix with a spoon. Drink ALL the liquid in the container.
  • You MUST drink two (2) more 16-ounce containers of water over the next 1 hour. Use the empty container to do this.
  • At 10:00 P.M., begin the second dose of SUPREP. This will be done the same way as before. Pour ONE (1) 6-ounce bottle of SUPREP liquid into the mixing container given in the SUPREP kit. Add cool drinking water to the 16-ounce line on the container and mix with a spoon. Drink ALL the liquid in the container. This should be done in one hour.
  • You MUST drink two (2) more 16-ounce containers of water over the next 1 hour. Use the empty container to do this. You may have clear liquids until midnight (no solid foods, cream or milk products).
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
  • If you have trouble drinking the solution, try a flat diet Ginger Ale and wait about an hour before trying to drink anymore of the prep.
  • If you are DIABETIC:
    • Oral Medication – DO NOT take your morning dose of medication.
    • Insulin – reduce the morning dose by ½ on the day of your procedure. 
  • Test results will be available within 7 days of your procedure.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Performed to identify and/or correct a problem in the bile duct and/or pancreas. A flexible endoscope with a side viewing camera is passed to the bile duct opening and dye is injected into the bile duct while X-rays are taken. You will be sedated during the procedure which usually takes 30 – 60 minutes.

  • Do not EAT or DRINK anything after midnight the night before your procedure except for necessary medications like Blood Pressure, Heart, Thyroid, or Seizure which can be taken with a sip of water.
  • You will be sedated for the procedure. Someone will need to drive you home.

  • Clear liquid diet for 24 hours following the procedure.
  • Test results will be available within 7 days of your procedure.

Esophageal Dilation (EGD with Dilation)

A procedure which stretches or opens a blocked portion of the esophagus. You will be sedated during the procedure which usually takes 15 minutes.

Esophageal Manometry

Performed to diagnose esophageal motility disorders. A flexible catheter will be placed into the esophagus through the nose. Pressure measurements will be recorded during both a wet and dry swallow. The procedure usually takes 30 minutes.

Procedure Instructions:

  • Do not EAT or DRINK anything 6 hours prior to your procedure except for necessary medications like Blood Pressure, Heart, Thyroid, or Seizure which can be taken with a sip of water.
  • Avoid the following medications, Levsin, Librax and Bentyl, for 48 hours.
  • Test results will be available within 7 days of your procedure.

Esophagoscopy with Ablation

A visual examination of the esophagus using a lighted flexible, fiberoptic endoscope. You will be sedated during the procedure which usually takes 30 minutes.

Procedure Instructions:

  • Increase your current Acid Blocking medication to one (1) by mouth twice a day.
  • Do not EAT or DRINK anything after midnight the night before your procedure except for necessary medications like Blood Pressure, Heart, Thyroid, or Seizure which can be taken with a sip of water.
  • You will be sedated for the procedure. Someone will need to drive you home.
  • Please inform the doctor if you are currently taking Coumadin.
    • Stop Coumadin 5 days prior to the procedure.
  • Test results will be available within 7 days of your procedure.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

A visual examination of the sigmoid colon using a lighted flexible, fiberoptic endoscope. You will not be sedated during the procedure which usually takes 15 minutes.

Procedure Instructions:

  • Do not EAT or DRINK anything after midnight the night before your procedure except for necessary medications like Blood Pressure, Heart, Thyroid, or Seizure which can be taken with a sip of water.
  • Take one (1) bottle of Magnesium Citrate beginning at 6pm or an hour after your last meal, the night before your procedure.
  • Use one (1) Fleets enema the morning of your procedure 30 minutes prior to leaving your house.
  • You will NOT be sedated for the procedure.
  • Please inform the doctor if you are currently taking Coumadin.
    • Stop Coumadin 5 days prior to the procedure.
  • Test results will be available within 7 days of your procedure.

Upper GI Endoscopy (EGD)

Upper GI Endoscopy with Bravo Placement (EGD)

A visual examination of the upper intestinal tract using a lighted flexible, fiberoptic endoscope. You will be sedated during the procedure which usually takes 10 minutes. A small pH probe is temporarily attached to the wall of the esophagus. You will wear a recorder for the next 48 hours. After insertion, resume your normal activities and you will be asked to log any symptoms.

Procedure Instructions:

  • Stop all Acid Suppression medications 10 days prior to the procedure such as but not limited to:
    Omeprazole Kapidex Prilosec Prevacid Protonix Aciphex Nexium Carafate Zantac Pepcid
  • During the time you are NOT taking the above mentioned medications, you make take Tums, Maalox or Mylanta. STOP these medications 48 hours prior to the procedures.
  • Do not EAT or DRINK anything 8 hours prior to the procedure except for necessary medications like Blood Pressure, Heart, Thyroid, or Seizure which can be taken with a sip of water.
  • You will be sedated for the procedure. Someone will need to drive you home.
  • Please inform your doctor if you are scheduled for an MRI within 2 weeks of this procedure.
